window sizes

Is it possible to drag a window to a size that just leaves the side bar and the top and bottom toolbars visible, and use that size as a default? I've tried, but each time Vista is shut down it restarts with the vista default settings, i.e. a small window in the middle. I use 1280 x 1020. huck
